Summary

STARTING WAGE: $17.30 hr

 

Laborer 1 is the entry level crew position trained to assist the Foreman with construction tasks associated with the repair and or construction of railroad bridges throughout the United States and Canada.  Employees are promoted according to their capabilities and desire for advancement, not after a specific period of time.  Employees must complete specific training activities and pass a written exam for advancement.

Responsibilities

  • Remove steel rivets with pneumatic tool
  • Tighten structural steel bolts with impact wrench
  • Remove existing structural steel with oxygen and acetylene torch
  • Drill holes in existing or new structural steel with magnetic drill
  • Drill holes in existing or new timber with 1/2" Electric or Hydraulic Drill
  • Hang Scaffolding
  • Work at heights while utilizing lineman equipment
  • Ascend and descend slopes with rough terrain
  • Drive spikes and drive pins with maul
  • Dig using hand shovel
  • Operate 1/2' drill and generator, impact wrench, pneumatic tools, hydraulic tools and chain saw
  • Use lineman gear, D-handle spade (shovel), sharp shooter (shovel), crow bar, and pry bar

Requirements

Education and/or Experience  

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Previous experience with heavy physical labor
  • Exposure to heights 

Mathematical Skills 

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals 
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent
  • Ability to draw and interpret bar graphs

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Possess a valid driver’s license, and the ability to pre-qualify for a Company Operator’s Permit

Other Requirements

  • Ability to successfully complete gas mask, lead exposure, respirator usage and Fall Protection training programs
  • Must be able to travel 100% of the time 

Physical Demands

  • This position involves Heavy Work: exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects 
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle, feel, lift and grab; reach with hands and arms; push and pull; climb and balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; talk and hear
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus

Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions 
  • The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; and vibration 
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; and risk of electrical shock 
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud
